  1. If you have a choice, you should never buy an automatic transmission.  On a new car, and automatic costs about $1500 extra, and in return, it gives you absolutely nothing.

    You'll notice he says "Most automatics, nowadays, are almost as reliable as a manual".  That assumes you are basing an opinion on the last 100 years or so; automatics were not anywhere near as durable or reliable as manuals.  I thought I'd post that just in case you didn't know it.

    In fact, in your town you will find several businesses that do nothing but repair automatic transmissions, all day long.  Some of them may even be national chains.  Go by such a place and look around at what they're doing.  You won't find any shop in your town that specializes in repairing manual transmissions, because they'd starve to death.


  2. No, not really: Most automatic gearboxes are now as reliable as manuals, and if there is a problem, a manual would probably be just as expensive to repair.
