  1. you should rent skis until you are comfortable on them

  2. i would get some off craigslist if it is a big deal or maybe just rent for a wail. also do you have someone to ski with? skiing, especially for beginners is really necessary to do good so you can get advice, complements and so you do have fun. Also get in a lesson if you don't have a really good skier to tech you.

  3. you'll need :

    skis

    boots

    warm socks

    warm sweatpants(not too thick)

    skipants

    Jacket

    sweater

    gloves

you could also get a helmet, goggles/sunglasses

    good luck

  4. Head has some great skiis for starters(sounds like you don't ski a lot) so if you get a pair of Head skis you will be set. Also for gear - get a helmet, if you think you need one (Spider would be the company to use) If you need a coat, gloves, pants etc. get SPIDER they are the best company for snow gear. Or you could get the Summit Series - North face these are really thin and menuverable but if you get caught in some trees your new coat will be ruined

  5. Besides clothing that should keep you warm and dry, your first and most important purchase is a pair of boots that fit you properly. You can rent skiis and poles at most resorts, the boots for rent are seldom a good, much less a near perfect fit.

Be prepared to spend 3-4 hours in a pair of boots in the ski shop before you purchase them. You can start looking now take your time.  Impose on the sales people, insist that they boot should fit correctly. It must fit TIGHT around your foot and ankle. The boot will loosen as you wear it, you are feeling a sponge surface against your foot that is a new feeling. It will compress during the day, but it must not be painful. You will spend 4-8 hours a day in these boots for 2-3 years of use. The selection of boots is limited now, but the prices are good.  Do not buy a boot that is not perfect for your foot. Do buy foot beds, get checked for cants and any anomalies in your foot. Take a series of lessons at the area, use rental skiis the first few days.

You might try the thrift shops near your home and try on the ski boots they have so you get used to the feel of different boots. Do not buy them there.  Do write down every boot brand and model you try, also size and feel.

Get in shape by doing a regular exercise program from now until the season starts.  Try to find a "Skiers Edge" machine near you, it will help you learn faster.
