  1. On every visit I’ve made to this border region I am further amazed by the culture there. It is like no other that I’ve experienced and one very distinct from any other US or Mexican culture I know. The people, Mexican or USean, live on both sides of the border; they “cross over” frequently. Some cross two times a week for grocery shopping, fine dining in San Diego, or their copy of the Sunday Times. Others cross two times a day, dropping off the kids at a private school or going to and from work or college. On the morning news, the traffic report doesn’t cover the fender bender blocking up the glorieta or main freeway, rather the video footage and commentary is focused on the number of cars in the Sentri lane at San Ysidro and the expected wait time to cross the border. Hours these people wait to drop a significant chunk of change into the US economy!

This place has been built up around a border, a physical, tangible wall, a geopolitical boundary. And yet, it is borderless, bilingual, bilateral, binational, a culture and community all its own.

  2. I do not live in Tijuana but I have visited it quite a few times.  First piece of advice would be if you are driving from California, park your car on the US side and then walk across.  It is easy to get into Tijuana by car, but getting out takes a long time because of customs.  Also, you would worry about your car being stolen or having an accident.  Some insurances will not cover damages because you are in another country.

Tijuana is a poor area but the people are very friendly and lively.  There is a lot of shopping to do overthere and you will see the most prices will be in pesos and dollars.  Know the exchange rate when you get there.  Last I looked it was about 10 pesos to a dollar.
