Adult cicadas live only to reproduce, lay eggs and die!  Most of their life cycle is spent as an underground grub feeding on organic matter in the soil.  Adults don't even have functional digestive systems.

Once the adults emerge, the males starting "singing" to attract a female.  After mating the female will lay eggs beneath the bark of young stems.  The eggs hatch and the larva drop to the ground where they burrow into the soil and feed on sap from the roots of plants.  Different species may take from 3 to 17 years to grow, mature, pupate and emerge.
