  1. dinodino´s answer is great. Just a bit more

to Toledo run out of Madrid highspeed suburb trains (www.renfe.es). Also a daytrip to Segovia es possible out of Madrid.

In Extremadura I would recomend Mérida with lots of roman ruins and a roman theater still in use.

In every place you go to contact the turist office. They are extremely helpfull and give you maps, booklets etc for free (normally). Partly they also sell souvenirs of a good style (no turist trap!)

Renfe (www.renfe.es again) has a kind of a travel pass. But I don´t know if it is available for Europeans. On this page, as far as I remember, is also a map of the different networks: long distance (Larga distancia), regional and suburb (Cercanías) for the different regions/towns.

May I suggest not to drive in Madrid. You won´t find a parking space except in (partely) expensive parkings. Use the 10-journey-ticket, which is about 7 €. It brings you by subway (Metro) to everything rapidly and clean.

Contact also the Spanish Turism Office in your country. They will send you brochures about every region you want to visit.

Otherwise: Enyoy your stay and Bienvenidos a España.

  2. Well, Toledo and Andalucía are gorgeous and not to miss, but what about Barcelona? Almost everyone says is one of the prettiest cities in the world. True, I live here, but it's true. You just can't miss it. And I personally love the north of Spain, especially Euskadi and Galicia (reminds me to Ireland), but maybe it's too much for one trip

  3. Hiya!

Well I have never been to Madrid or any of those places, but I live in Benalmadena, Andalucia and would reccomend a holiday here to anyone!

Near to Malaga if you want to see the sites. You don't mention your age but there is great night life in Benalmadena and neighbouring Fuengirola. Theres everything here traditional villages, (pueblos), shopping, bars, wide variety of restaurants & clubs. Also Andalucia is close to Gibraltar if you wanted to go and see the monkeys or the english traffic lights!!! Mijas is also worth a visit!

Id stay in a hotel if I were you, theres some lovely ones in Benalmadena, check ut Sunset Beach Club!

Anyway hope you have a fab holiday! Sounds like you are going to be busy!

  4. Madrid, Sevilla (take the AVE-high speed train- 2 hours), Granada, Valencia and Barcelona. Enough for 2 weeks.

  5. I guess id_star has never left Valencia, because his answer is totally of base. If you are going to spend two and a half weeks in Spain you really should invest in a good guide book...but as an overview:

Madrid is a great city, great people food and nightlife. Highlights are the Prado and Reina Sophia Art Museums, Plaza Mayor,  the Royal Palace...you need 2 to 3 full days for Madrid.  Toledo is a absolutely charming Medieval City noted for the Cathedral, Synagogue and various places with El Greco paintings, The Alcazar...one full day is good for Toledo.

In Andalusia the highlights are Seville, Granada, Cordoba and the Costa Del Sol if you like Beach resorts.  There is a tone of stuff to see in Seville -- you need a coupe of days. Cordoba has Las Mesquita, Granda the Alhambra, both places a day or to is sufficient -- other places there that are good to visit are Ronda, Malaga and Cadiz.

Can't comment on Extramudra, haven't been there.  Two and half weeks is a lot of time other places to consider not to far from Madrid are La Mancha and Cuenca.  Spain has a very varied geography, thousands of years of history and a variety of architecture, lots of musuems, etc.. Not knowing where your interests lie it's tough to get specific.

Really, spend the 15 to 20 bucks on a decent guidebook like Fodors, Eyewitness etc. You will be glad you did -- It will help you make the most of your time...

Yes, Valencia is supposed to be nice also, and you actually have enough time to go there, (if you skip Extremudura) but for a first trip to Spain, Madrid, Toledo and Andalusia is the way to go.

  6. you be missing out if you not going to barcelona, its prettier then madrid, there is ocean and mountains = the view is always great, plus its warm in the winter (unlike madrid)

and if hotels are to expensive and hostels to many people in the same room; check craigslist.org, i always find places to stay on that site no mater where i travel too

  7. To be honest with you, I live in Spain and there isn't much...

There are a few religious places like where I think franco is burried, there is a huge cross. Thats ok, but isn't much.

In Valencia there is a lot ( in my opinion) I would go there. You can go to ocean grafico (its somthign like that) and you can see loads of humans and dolphins, its amazing.

Also there is Gulevers castle, which is just a big giant man which is all slides... its great for kids...

Then there is sun, and beaches thats the next best.

    Enjoy it!
