Heyyy..... I need help with public speaking!?

This year at school I'm in a class called American Government. But little did I know, it's actually more like a "help with the Student Council" class. I'm not even in Student Council though!

We're holding a big get together of all the Student Council members in our state later this year. Each one of us in the class has to be part of a group that does a specific task to prepare for the event.

What we have to do is somehow find people around the school to help with the event. But I know not many people would want to, and I don't want to look stupid going up to random people and asking them.

This is where the public speaking problem comes in. Plus, every Thursday, we have to report to the class how our progress in finding people is coming.

Basically I'm not very much of an eloquent speaker. I'm very shy and have no leadership experience, and I don't know how I'm going to find people to help.

Sorry if my explanation was confusing.... thanks in advance!

  1. First stop looking at yourself as to what your not. And don't tell everyone what your not.

Start focusing on what you are.

Start focusing on what you want, not what your not getting.

Finally, take the attitude that you thrive on rejection. I know this sounds a bit silly. But run with it.

    Best wishes...

PS.  And if you need to learn anything about public speaking, most of what you need is here. Go to the speaker skills and just focus on one or two.

The most powerful one to start using is pausing. Learn and master this and every thing else will fall into place.

  2. I took a public speaking class in college. When writing a speech, start with your introduction (paragraph 1), then tell them about what you're going to tell them (par.2). Tell them (par3.) Then tell them what you told them about, recap (par.4). Then a closing paragraph. Try to make eye contact with your listeners. Use good posture, no fidgeting! The hardest and one of the most important things- don't say "ummm",  or "like" throughout your speech. Hope this helps, best of luck.
