  1. It depends on what you are looking for.  I lived in a 2 bedroom unit, for $230per week. (rent is really really expensive!) But there are flats for alot less.

    Then food, well that is more expensive as well because they have to ship it up from other states. But if you go to the parap market it is less there.

    Power is usally high because people run their air con all the time, but if you can make do with a fan then it will be less.  Water there is no charge for that.

    The cost of living in Darwin is close to the highest in Australia (which is why our wages are also relatively high). The average cost of a 2 bedroom unit to rent is $300 per week.

    Electricity and water costs are both signifcantly higher than Eastern states. If you rent a house it will generally be between 400 and 500 per week. Petrol is over $1.60 per litre.

    Food is significantly more expensive. Fresh local fruit from the markets is a bit cheaper ( Parap on Saturdays and Rapid Creek Markets on Sundays).

    Those of us that love it here still think it is worth it.
