Hi, I'm going to be getting a hamster soon and and had some questions?

First off, my dad has a shredder that is often used and I was wondering if i could use the shreds for the bottom of the cage

(instead of some wood shavings). Can ink harm the hamster?

My next question, is can hamsters have honey every once in a while as a treat or is it too strong for them?

Lastly, is it really worth going through all the trouble to buy a a book on hamsters from a pet store??

Thanks!

  1. You can shred toilet paper, but not just paper. They can have a little bit of honey, or peanut butter. But not too much. And just look up hamster care on the internet instead of buying a book.

  2. Don't use the shreds! The ink could make your hamster ill [since they hoard the bedding into their cheek pouches to make their beds]. You can feed them honey, only if it is prepared properly. You can buy the book if you want, but it may be a waste of money since you can just use the internet. A lot of what I know about hamsters came from this website; hamsterhideout.com

Use that instead of a book, and look around the website until you find a page about snacks and it will tell you how to prepare the honey. It will also tell you how bad the ink [in the shavings] is for your hamster!!!

Hope I helped and good luck with your hamster!

  3. Hi,Ink will harm the hamster if it smells it or digests it.your hamster could thm maybe even die!,are the shreds like dust or are they like real shredding basically.if they are like flakes then it will be ok.Buying a hamster book takes less time then the internet but it costs money.i use the internet. Its like 1000000 hamster books in one!.but its totally up to u! Hope i helped and good luck!

  4. shreds will do fine for the bottom

    ink will harm hamsters

honey is okay about every month or two for hamsters

don't buy a book read up on the internet

  5. the ink will probably bother the hamster badly! the smell, the taste, and everything.

you can give hamsters honey but you don't have too

it can be useful at times but i tink the internet is more helpful. that is how i know everyting form animals!

  6. It is /always/ worth it to get a book if you're serious about getting this pet.

I believe the shreddings will be fine, although i'm not entirely sure.

And Don't give them honey. Give them fresh fruit and veggies (google which ones will be okay, or look through your book about hammies (: )

Honey is  extremely sugary, which is bad. It is also very thick, and could potentially choke them ):

    and you don't want that.
