  1. I travel to CZ often and have never had a problem with pickpocketing (knock on wood).  As a general rule of thumb I never keep my wallet in my back pocket when I travel.  I keep it in a jacket pocket I can zip closed.  A big rip-off in Prague is the mark-up on Taxis (100 - 500%) so avoid them at all costs!  Not all of them are crooks but it doesn't hurt to ask how much from point A-B!  Read this story posted by the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/...

To make your experience worthwhile, try to pick up a few Czech phrases, the locals enjoy that.  Keep in mind that Prague is a tourist town with a lot to see and do.  A few kilometers outside the city offer some interesting cultural and historical sites.  Don't just limit yourself to Prague!  Be careful of some of the pivo (beer) some of the pack a good punch and be sure to try the beer cheese and enjoy traditional Czech foods.  Good luck and have fun!

  2. Keep your money and credit cards close to yourself... Train's not the safest place especially if you're planning on sleeping (there are a lot of pickpockets)...

Beside that it should be a joyful journey...

Have fun! Czech Republic is great!

  3. Take a sleeper car. I don't foresee any real difficulties :-)

  4. Do not fall asleep on the train without everything you own attached to you! Have a tucked away money belt on under your clothes and use any other belongings as a pillow or hold onto them. Thievery on trains is rampant. Other then that, train travel in Europe is delightful.
