  1. One thing that my teacher did freshmen year was gave us tape, papper and string to see who could build the tallest tower.

  2. Our math teacher took us outside and used a surveyors transit and measuring tape to determine the height of the local water tower and otehr objects. And then another day we ran a survey line from US geological elevation marker a mile from the school back to the school to get he elevation above sea level of the front step. You can rent a transit and pole. We also ran elevation lines with the ag class to mark where a terrace would run in a field if one were created.

  3. math was never my strongest subject so I don't know if this will be feasible or not but try to make the subject material something applicable to the students interests.  Most kids are interested in money and how they can earn it (especially with the least amount of work) figure ways you can use that in teaching them.  For those who are going to be famous sports, musical, acting, etc... stars they need to be able to make sure they aren't getting ripped off or to be able to determine which contract will get them the most $$ in the long run.....

They need to be able to work percentages so they know when out shopping which is a better value - the $40 skirt at 15% off or the $60 skirt at 20% off.  If you can teach them how to understand stock dividends etc....  Anything that a students can relate to in their own life/interests will keep their attention better.  I don't know if  you can even use these ideas in subjects like trig.

  4. Here is an unpublished paper by a friend of mine.  He wrote the paper for an elementary school audience, but it is equally applicable to high school.  It contains a link to his home page with his email address if you want to email him about it.
