  1. get a phone card...they don't advise using any cell phones down there...too easy to steal number....get a ph card...been there many times...last time jan 08

  2. You can take a cell phone with you and have IUSACELL localize it for free and you can buy local air time if you want to be reached.

If you do not want to do that then 'Tarjeta para Telefonear" is the more practical thing. (Telephone Card)

It is inserted at most phone booths and costs 50 cents a minute to Canada and the U.S.A.

    Will Not call Europe.

These cards can be purchased from $3.00 to $10.00 are are available at most newspaper stands and stores "OXXO"  for example.

Do NOT even think about making a collect call and certainly NOT person to person.

It could cost $50.00 USD for a short call.

  3. A prepaid phone you buy in Mexico will not work in the US, and prepaid phones you buy in the US won't work in Mexico.

And you probably already know that roaming with a US carrier while in Mexico costs $1 per minute (or more) - when it works.

Better to rent a cell phone from Mexitel Cellular. They send the phone to you before you go so you have it the moment you land and calls to anywhere in the US only cost $1 (per call, not per minute). And calls to other phones in Mexico (like your hotel or your transfer driver) cost only 50 cents per call.
