Hi, I have a big over-the-range GE microwave installed in my kitchen near my prep sink, not over a range. After I had it for 2 years, I received a letter from GE that there was a problem with the magnatron and that they would replace it. So they replaced the entire microwave. That was in 2003. It has worked fine until a few days ago and it just stopped working. I called GE but I cannot get any help from them--they say to call a repairman. But this is so expensive! To save money, my husband and son can disconnect the microwave (no easy feat) and take it to a repair place. At the repair place they said that they would look at it to determine what the problem is, although they figure that it is the magnatron. By taking it to the repair shop I would save about $70, but the magnatron is around $135 and the repair is about $30-50. So I will have $165 to $185 invested in the microwave--but it is still 5 years old. Should I go through all this hassle or throw it out and buy a new one? I am certain that my microwave cost around $500 when I bought it. Help!
