Hello, well here goes...I need to figure out how to pay for my college, but my parents haven't dont their taxes for the past two year. They make too much for a free ride (pell grant) and their credit is bad so I can not get a private loan.. So my question is can I apply as an independent with only my tax info in order to get a loan? I believe you have to be 24 to be considered an independent student, but what if I were to be emancipated? (im 19 now BTW..) Thanks any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I'm stuck and dont know what to do!

  1. It is doubtful you could get emancipated because when you turned 18 you (by default) became emancipated.

By not filing taxes your parents are hindering you from getting fin aid.  You need to convince them (somehow) to do their taxes so you can apply.  It is very rare for fin aid folks qualify someone as an independent when they are under 24 and don't meet all the dependency regulations.  (although they might consider it  if both of your folks are in jail for tax evasion- lol).
