Thanks for the reply Michael. I change it to Restricted. Does this mean that no one, other than members, can view the group information? What is the difference between Restricted and Closed groups?

  1. management- under group settings click membership- Membership Type and Welcome Message (Edit) <-- click the edit- check/ select restricted- click save changes

(restricted group means you approve membership. if in this area you select 'closed', this mean access to gain members can only be done via an invite which happen to be glitchy, and once selected, you can not reverse a closed group back to anyhting but a closed group. )

you can also take the group out of the directory-

Description (Edit) <-- click the edit- scroll down to Listing Type and select Not listed in Yahoo! Groups directory- click save changes

  2. I assume you mean that you've created a Group with Open Membership (anyone can join) and you want to change it to a Closed Membership Group (only people who are invited by you can join).  If so, click on Management on the left-hand side of your Group's web page.  Then click on Membership on the right-hand side of the resulting page.  Then click the Edit link next to Membership Type And Welcome Message.  Then select Closed next to Membership Type.  Don't forget to click the Save Changes button when you're done.

EDIT : In a Closed Membership Group, there is only one way for the Group to get new members - you (or a moderator of the Group if there is one) send the prospective new member an Invitation by clicking Invite on the left-hand side of the Group's web page.  There is no Join This Group button on the home page of the Group (see below).

In a Restricted Membership Group, there are two possible ways to get new members.  (1) By Invitation, just like in a Closed Membership Group.  (2) A person who finds the Group's home page can click on the Join This Group button to become a Pending Member.  A Pending Member cannot do anything in your Group; however, you have a 14-day window to approve the person, which would make him/her an ordinary member who can do anything that other members can do (or, if you want, you can deny the Pending Membership to keep the person out).

Note that # 2 above in a Restricted Membership Group is still different than an Open Membership Group.  In an Open Membership Group, a person who finds the Group's home page and clicks on the Join This Group button becomes an ordinary member right away, without you having to approve him/her.

As for your other additional question, I'm not sure what you mean by "the group information".  But I suspect you're referring to Group stuff that is controlled by other Group settings.  For example, to make sure non-members can't see the messages that members have posted, you would click on Management as above, then click on Messages under Group Settings, then click the Edit link next to Posting And Archives, then make sure the setting under Archive Options is not Anyone (again, if you change this setting, don't forget to click the Save Changes button when you're done).
