  1. Not getting much of a response are you?

Come on ... don't expect to simply have someone tell you what to buy.  How does someone else know what type of preferences/needs you have?

What do you mean by "inexpensive"?  What resolution do you want/need? What type of room conditions? What screen will you use? How big a room? etc. etc.

All projectors are different, with specific pros and cons.  What one person finds acceptable another may not.

So, first .. everyday viewing for what?  (i.e. HDTV, games, SDTV, DVDs, Blu-ray).

If you consider $500 your price point you might as well look at 800x600 pixels (or thereabout) projectors. Contrast ratio will be weak (under 1000:1) and video processing is likely mediocre.  That said, you may find a reconditioned or discontinued model in the is price range but you'll have to do some searching.  Try the InFocus store (on the USA site) ... they sometimes have good reconditioned projectors in this price range

At the $1000 point you can get into some good projectors (Remember, a replacement lamp costs (typically) $350+ ... so you aren't going to get much for too much less than this). Since you want a suggestion, look at the Optoma HD-70 for example (first link for a review).

You said you didn't want links but have a look at the last two links for lot's of info, reviews and recommendations.
