A call to Town A from a pay phone in Town B costs 83¢ for the first minute and 26¢ for each additional minute or portion of a minute. If a student has $6.80 in change, how long can she talk? I keep getting the wrong answer so I figured I wasn't putting it in the correct format. Thanks.

  1. The problem is solved this way

    0.83 + 0.26 n=6.8   here n min she is going to talk

    n=22.96

    because of the fact that she cannot talk part of the minute the answer is 22

    Let's check

    0.83 + 0.26*22= 6.55 (OK)

    if he over-talks one more minute it will cost him  +0.26=6.81  (not OK)

    Answer: 22 minutes

  2. 23 mins

  3. It would be 6.8-.83/.26

  4. It's a proportion. You can just subtract the first charged minute from the money amount first:

    6.80- .83= 5.97

    5.97/ X minutes= .26/ 1 minute

    Cross multiply:

    .26X= 5.97

    Divide by the variable:

    They have enough money to talk for 22.96 minutes

    Break that down:

    23 minutes and 36 seconds

  5. Lex x be the call of the first minute, and y be the additional minutes.

    you know the total cost of the call is $6.80

    The first minute costs $0.83

    the second min after costs $0.26

    since  total charge is $6.80... and since the first minute costs $0.83, we know that after the first minute, he still has $5.97 left.

    now just divided $5.97 by $0.26 =22.9615...

    this means there's 22 minutes of talk time with $0.26/min

    so he had the 1st minute + 22 minutes = 23 minutes

  6. = ([$6.80 - $0.83]/$0.26) + 1

    = ($5.97/$0.26) + 1

    = 597/26 + 1

    = 22 25/26 + 1

    = 23 25/26

    Answer: 23 25/26 min OR 23 min 57 9/13 seconds

  7. 1+ (5.97/.26) = minutes

  8. $6.80 - 83¢ = $5.97   →  1 minute

    ($5.97)/26¢ = →  22.961538461538461538461538461538 minutes

    22.961538461538461538461538461538 minutes + 1 minute

    23.961538461538461538461538461538 minutes →   answer

    --regards--

  9. I think if you set it up as y=.26x+.83, you can solve from there. just put $6.80 in for y and solve.

  10. :)

    does that help???

  11. I think for about 8.somthing minutes

  12. Let X=minutes after first minute

    change every thing to cents

    83+26X=680

    26X=680-83

    26X=597

    X=22.96=23

    she can talk =1+23= 24 minute

  13. First subtract 6.80-.83= 5.97 now you need to find how many times 26 goes into 5.97 by division.
