I have a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Spanish and Italian. I have been working in law firms since graduating but I am getting tired of the law/criminal justice world. I have worked with tutoring kids in the past and I think I would enjoy teaching. Can anyone give me suggestions on what to do??

  1. I was just like you...I have a BS in Law Enforcement Administration.  When I went to the university to inquire, I got talked into a master's program.   I do no advise doing this--makes it more difficult to get your first job as they have to pay you more but you are still inexperienced.

What I wish I would have done is have my state do a transcript search...this will then tell you what classes you will need to get your certification.  You won't have another degree--just the classes to get certified.

Yes, the subbing thing is a good idea, but a lot of people find it hard without any teaching experience because you have to really have a handle on your discipline skills.  I would suggest maybe being an aide...great experience!

Good luck...teaching is a great profession!

  2. I would suggest substitute teaching to start.  That way you can work in different schools in different settings with different grades and find out what grade you like the best.  Some states require that you be substitute certified (like NJ).  If you find a grade that you like, then I would suggest going back to get your teaching degree.  Best of luck to you! =)

  3. Depending on your experience with languages you could get a teach language in limited school districts, and in districts where there is a dire need for teachers (usually inner city) you can get a temporary certification to teach in a general classroom.  However, you will need to go back to school to get your teacher professional courses in most cases.  Some districts, will pay for most to all of your tuition.

To find out more information, you will need to contact the particular districts you are willing to teach in.  They will give you specific information on their protocal...each one is different.

  4. Some states are so desperate for teachers that they will allow you to teach while you are in school working on your Master's in Education.  This is of course if you already have a Bachelors in something, which you do.

  5. Go back to school get degree needed to be a teacher.
