He has been on it for about 2 months. This is supposed to calm him down stop outbursts etc, but i havn't really seen much difference only that he seems a little lazy, but stilll all the behaviour problems, is there anyone whos child has been on this drug, if so what mg?

My husband doesn't like the idea of him being on drugs but his not the one home all day etc. the consultant said to put mg up, but torn between husband, and weither it will work.

  1. Medications only mask the symptoms, though Risperdone worked wonders for us...  Medications will not stop the outbursts. Try therapy.. Physical and ocupational...

Watch out for the weight gain with Risperdone.

  2. Risperidone (Risperdal) is quite a common treatment for autism, and eventually should stop the outburts. The drug is going to take awhile to cycle itself so give it some time.

The drug should work. Now, I say should because everyone is different and we all react differently to medications.

Follow the advice of the Psychiatrist who prescribed the drug, they are afterall the professional. Give it some time (the Risperdal) and take it from there.

I'm glad to see parents like you though, people who care enough to ask questions and want to get help for the child. Bless you and good luck.

  3. Drugs dealing with such conditions often just try to subdue, the dose is probably too low - take him back to the doctor, kick it up a bit, and he should be neutralized.

  4. wouldn't let my son on these, i think the side effects are too risky! look into other options!

  5. I was on the same thing but I know there are better options. The one thing that really helped was seroquel, but i had to stop taking it eventually because it made me really drowsy. It is a pill you take at night so the drowsiness isn't a big deal for most people. I was on 5mg of risperidone but i was 18 at the time. 2 months is more than enough time to see an effect, most show results in 1-4 weeks, 30 days at the most!
