  1. It is important to be aware of accidents that can happen to children and how they could be prevented.

Have a well written policy on health and safety procedures which is regularly reviewed.

Hazards in an early years setting can be:

Feeding (be aware of adult:child ratio/allergies/harnesses in highchairs/good hygiene/check food & drink temperatures).

Nappy changing (should take place where danger of rolling is minimised/hand washing/ correct disposal of human waste is essential).

Sleeptime (sleeping babies and children should be regularly monitored/cot death advice should be followed/sidesof cots & beds fastened securely/age appropriate beds/avoid over-heating rooms/do not give pillows to children under 2 years).

Outdoor play (good adult supervision/equipment should be age & stage appropriate, e.g. bicycles and tricycles/protective helmets should be worn/children should be taught how to wait their turn/sufficient space provided).

Doors and fencing (good supervision/safety catches on doors/security fencing provided outdoors & regularly checked).

Kitchen (safety gates to prevent children gaining access/cleaning products to be locked away).

Toilets - supervision when children use the toilet/systems in place to know which children are at the toilet).

Not sure exactly what you want to know but you can email me if I can help you further. Good luck with your NVQ.
