Camper is a restoration project and bodywork is virtually mint. However the engine has been replaced with a Ford V6 but hasnt been plumbed in so a non runner. What do I need to look out for? Is there a way of testing if the engine is ok before parting with my cash? Any pitfalls with this type of V6 arrangement? What is the ball part figure to get it up and running again. Help help help! All assistance and feedback greatly appreciated!

  1. Before I parted up with 1 penny I would make sure that the V6 Ford engine is not out of a stolen vehicle, has the present owner had the V5C amended with the Ford engine number? Second of all I would seriously think about scrapping old Ford lump and installing the Volkswagen 1.9 diesel, I know they were slow but they were very economical -- your hand will be for ever in your pocket feeding the V6.

I would advise you to look for another vehicle, just think of the surgery needed to install the V6 and the inherent unreliability. But if you decide to stick with the Ford I wish you good luck, but can't help think it will be a money pit. Cheers, Gizz

  2. I would recommend taking it to a mechanic and having at least a compression check done and possibly a leak down test.  One checks for internal engine compression, and one for leaks.  The mechanic will interpret the results for you and tell you whether the engine is strong or not.

  3. I would go on the internet and look for like restorations.  I've been around vws all my life and never heard of such a restoration, although they would likely be likely.  If its a project that someone has started and they have all the blueprints, and can ensure it happening, I would read them, but this is a huge project, I wouldn't worry about the engine, I would worry about systems engineering.  How do I get it in there and make it run.  Many many hours.  If its mint like you say, why not keep it mint.  I have friend that rebuilds vw engines and you could have  a vw engine in slicker than any ford.

  4. I'd avoid it.

The thing with VW is that they make reliable mechanicals. Taking out a VW lump & replacing it with an overweight, underpowered Ford V6 is just completely pointless, you're doing away with one of the best bits. If the rest is really good, look at it with the intention to put a VW engine back in there & flog the Ford unit, running or not.
