Hi, can a backyard sortof mechanic replace a 99 Toyota Corolla clutch? ?

I'll buy the Haynes, or similar type repair manual. Just wondering if any special tools are needed, also any tips or info on the "how to" would be appreciated--I'll be doing it for a friend that can't afford to have a shop do it--Thanks

You could try - but I would not.  You would have to jack the car up, remove the transaxle, lower it to the ground (and support it so as to not damage it), take it apart . . . I would not attempt it without a fully equipped shop.  It's not like changing the brakes.

i,am a shadetree mechanic and i changed several clutches. all you need is a floor jack, tools and a alignment tool to line the clutch up.

Yes you can do it, although expect to be a day long and very dirty job.  Once you are done, the front suspension will need to get aligned.  I believe the front axle will have to be remove as well as the steering components.  

You'll save a whole lots of money and gain so much experiences too!

If you have never replaced a clutch,I would never try it without someone there with expert experience.You will in the end, pay a tow truck and a shop the extra cost to reassemble your car.

A back yard man can do the job,Yes.

Don't forget to machine shop the flywheel and replace the rear main oil seal.
