  1. Let's not forget religion. Remember, what is now "Pakistan" and "Bangladesh" used to be a part of "India" - the countries separated over religious friction and violence. Even Ghandi was killed by an adherent of another religion, largely for religious reasons.

  2. Although the caste sytem is very strong in India and is one of the major causes of social division in India, it is not the only one.

Gender is also a cause of social division, as is skin tone. Level of education is also a very prominent method of social division in India.

But education is often attained by those of the highest caste, Brahmins. Many schools now have quota systems in place to allow members of lower castes an opportunity to achieve the same levels.

To Corey below, Gandhi was killed by a fundamentalist Hindii, someone of his own faith. But you are correct to add religion, as it is a cause of social division in every society.

  3. Custom. The caste system is ancient.

  4. India is land of variety. There is great variety in variety of aspects. The languages, lifestyles, religions, habits, geography, climates, cultures might be different but still they unite us into an invisible frame, the frame of Indianism. Diversity is there in every aspect of India, a land that encloses 1,222,559 sq. meters of land and is home to more than one billion people. As such stats imply, there ought to be diversity, but this does not always imply that there are differences.

Such diversity is also found in the school of minds, where one stands for the motion, another stands against it. This means an added advantage, because while one is looking at the positive aspects of a side, other is hunting for the counterpart negatives.

  5. Caste system . Google it.
