If you're talking about Essex, Ontario, I can give you the scoop about that.  I live in Windsor, Ontario (on the U.S. Canada border) which is about a 20 minute drive from Essex; hence, Essex is an easy commute (depending on border traffic) to the States if you need that.  Essex itself is quite a rural, small community.  It is basically agricultural, with one main street with the basic amenities you would find in any small town, a bank, hardware store, several restaurants/bars, etc., and some shops.  It is basically in the centre of Essex County, so it is an easy commute to the beaches of Lake Erie (probably 20 minutes).

Well, that's about all I can think of.  It is small but certainly has all the necessities you would need to get by in a rural community.
