  1. Horses are euthanized on the racetrack by a shot because a veteranian determines the animal cannot live.


  2. They generally euthanize animals with an injection of a barbiturate such as pentobarbital.  That causes cardiac arrest VERY quickly (usually within 5-35 seconds).

    And they did it with Eight Bells because she couldn't have made it into the ambulance without either of her front legs to stand on. Horse legs don't usually heal very well. She would have been miserable, and infection and disease probably would have set in pretty quickly, too. It was hard on us, but it was much better for her.

  4. There was no way to move the horse when she had both front legs broken, this is true.  Euthanasia is done by lethal injection directly into a large vein, death is quick and painless.
