We spent a month honeymooning in NZ last year and i'm looking at property (we're from the UK) in Wellington. It's a great place with lovely surrounding areas but i was just wondering where the good places to live are if you work in/near the city and would like at least a quarter acre?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help with this.

  1. Many people live there.

  2. I'd consider the eastern suburbs (Miramar, Kilbirnie) which appear to be gentrifying quickly and become rather fashionable. Land prices are relatively cheap, it's 15–30 minutes from the city centre, and you will get your quarter-acre in some cases. There are still some sneaky back-road ways to get home during rush hour, unlike the likes of Karori, Johnsonville or the Hutt: get stuck and be prepared to live in your car.

  3. taunton is good.

  4. I was born in Welly, and lived there until 1996.

Bearing in mind you need a car in New Zealand, and you want a quarter acre (you don't say whether you want a flat section) I'd look at Karori for flat section in the bush, Khandallah/Ngaio/Wadestown for hilly bush, Seatoun/miramar for near-the-sea flat(ish), Makara for rural-but-short-drive-to-city.  I think the Hutt Valley is rubbish.  All of it.  Well all, except the little bit around Woburn that's a bit Sloaney.  Remember, though, that if the motorway is fouled it can take absolutely ages to get to the valley.  There's really only one way in or out, unless you want to go over the Paekak Hill (mission).  Any further advice on any given subject happily given.  guytownsley@yahoo.co.uk
