ummm what kind of IM?

if you have aol u would use file transfer and then choose the pic you want to show. yahoo works the same way to i think

if you have aol, you can find a button labeled pictures at the bottom of your chat box. click it, the other person witll need to accept, and well-ah!! you can now send them through IM!

Other ways to do it are to do it through filke transfer.  This works fir many other IM providers, as well as AOL
