  1. Rovers are a very good car, this problem is best sorted by an auto electrician,as it may be a combination of several things.good luck with it.

  2. Sounds like a possible short in either the starter or solenoid. I would trace the wiring back from the ignition, see if wires are touching that arent supposed to... possibly an animal chewed through the insulation and now 2 wires rub together causing the engine to turn over

  3. i had the same problem on a 414sli, it burns out your starter, and as you say the engine cranks, even when you are not near it.

I took mine to a local auto sparky, he by passed the relay/ecu from back of ignition barrel to the low tension terminal on the starter, it worked fine, sorry i do not remember the color of the wire, but the ecu is up the spout, fuse box in engine bay ( mine was on the right) diagram on the lid pull the one marked with a bolt of lightening this is the starter ecu, untill you get the wire sorted its a bump start, (ignition on and some poor sod shoving the car whilst some one else dips the clutch puts it in second then lets the clutch up it should start.)

  4. tap on the solenoid  with a hammer the points in the unit have welded themselves closed allowing juice to travel to the starter the tapping may pop them open  we use to do this to old chevy starters  they did it all the time except they just wouldn turn and the problem was in the starter not  the solenoid if that dosnt work change the starter solenoid  you alos have a starter relay its in those two   you may not have a relay so if not go  to the solenoid

  5. Most likely stuck starter motor solenoid - just swap the starter motor.

  6. Ignition switch is stuck in the "start" mode, or starter solenoid is out.  Solenoid is best bet.  Unhook battery and try to re hook and start again.
