Hi, im french and id like get married with my french friend in usa (he has green card). am i gonna be american

just want to know, i have to get married on september in los angeles with my friend, he s french, living since 20 years in usa, he has only the green card, and im french too but im just visiting him, what about after the wedding, am i gonna have the green card too, can i stay living with him in usa, i dont know what to do, i wrote to immigration but no answers, thanks if someone lived the same case, bye bye

  1. He is not an American Citizen, he is a green card holder; so no you would not be an American.  


  2. You dont get a green card, but it is not very hard to get one anyway if you are already here. I went through this with my friend and he got it in a few months.

  3. If I had my way I'd say "Sure, welcome to America, we'd love to have you become an American.".

    But unfortunately, I think there's more to it than that.

No.  You will need to apply for a change of status.  But if you are in the US under the visa waiver program, you must leave the US and apply for overseas.  This will take a while as he is not a citizen.  It would be much easier if her were to become a citizen first, which takes up to a year or more by itself.  Please note that if the USCIS agents think your marriage is fraudulent, you will both be in trouble and your friend could be deported.

  5. You don't become a citizen if you marry someone in the US!!!   YOu don't even get a automatic green card if you marry him.  YOu need to apply for a VIsa.  You just get preference, but not an automatic green card.
