  1. Because fully laden container ships cannot currently approach the docks because the water is too shallow.  It is simply a project to make Melbourne a more viable port for bigger ships for economic benefit.

    Obviously something so simple has just gotta be controversial.  Environmentalists state the dredging will be devastating to the marine ecosystems of the bay and stir up bacteria and pollutant chemicals that have settled over the years.  They are not wrong either.

    Whether it is the right of wrong thing to do depends on who you ask.
