  1. Volunteer Program in Peru

    AMAUTA VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

    The AMAUTA Volunteer Work Program provides the unique opportunity to live and work in Peru. Students will experience first-hand its rich cultural diversity while cultivating a superior level of Spanish proficiency. Through the Volunteer Program, AMAUTA and the volunteers are able to make contributions to Peruvian society and to help bridge the gap between foreign visitors and native Cusqueños.

    TYPES OF VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT

    Participants may choose both, the field and preferred location, of their volunteer placement. Possible fields of interest include social work, education, tourism, cultural work and catering. While most of AMAUTA's projects take place in Cusco, there are also projects out of the City. A complete list of the 30 projects can be sent upon request.

    PROCEDURE

    When booking the Volunteer Work Package, we'll ask you to send us your preferences, your resume (CV) and a motivation letter. When arranging a placement, our Volunteer Coordinator considers the student's personal goals, level of Spanish proficiency, prior work experience and length of probable commitment, as well as the needs of the host organisation. When the volunteer organisation agrees on the placement, we'll send confirmation of the student's voluntary work (placement document). The final decision regarding the acceptance of a student in a project will be taken by the organisation.

    Included in the package are:

        * A Spanish Course, including accommodation of your choice

        * Accommodation in the AMAUTA Student Residence during Volunteer Work

        * Organisation of volunteer work

        * Information package upon arrival

        * Participation in AMAUTA Student Activities (e.g. lectures, salsa class)

        * Free Internet

        * Volunteer meeting with initial information on Peruvian society and volunteer work placement

        * One personal meeting with AMAUTA's Volunteer Coordinator

        * Visit to the project on the first day of work including transportation

        * One free Spanish Class per week

        * Certificate

    SUPPORT OFFERED BY AMAUTA

    Upon arrival to Cusco, students receive an information package with preliminary information regarding the volunteer work experience. AMAUTA organises an introductory meeting with general information about Peruvian history and culture, working in Peru as a foreigner, cultural differences and social hierarchy of Peruvian society. During a student's course of study, he/she will have the opportunity to personally discuss the appropriate placement in terms of goals, desired experiences etc. with the Volunteer Coordinator. During the placements, the weekly volunteer meetings enable volunteers to talk in general about their experiences and raise any concerns.

  2. Unless you speak fluent Spanish, have a skill/expertise that is *severely* lacking and desperately needed in Peru, are a recognized professional in your particular area of expertise and already have a great deal of international experience, no organization is going to pay your expenses. Without ALL of the aforementioned, it's much more beneficial to hire local people and give them the jobs and income they desperately need, instead of paying for your room and board.

    There is a listing of the more-than-30 member organizations of the International Volunteers Program Association (IVPA) that is a good place to find reputable volunteer-for-a-fee programs -- programs where you don't need to have much experience in order to participate, and the placements are just for a few weeks or months:

    Be prepared to pay for your flights, in-country transportation, health insurance, accommodation, food, security, translators, training, staff to supervise and support you in your service, liaisons with the police and local officials, etc.

    Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations that place highly-skilled volunteers and do not charge them for suh, and how you can gain that experience locally, wherever you are right *now*, no matter your age.
