KM stands for KiloMeters, as in DR the mailing service is not that great is a reference to go by. They use a major highway like Autopista San Isidro KM 9 to indicate that at the level of 9 kilometers is where the destination is located.

Wel dear, in most of the countries (like Europe) and the majority of the others, they use the decimal system for measurements ( centimeter, decimeter,meter, KILOMETER) instead of the miles used in a other few countries (like the US). Hope this helped. ( Kilometro en español)

Well this is also used in the addresses of people because there are not always house numbers, so to define better a direction they use this system (example) Autopista Balaguer, km 3 1/2 Imbert. This same system was used in Spain years ago. So to help your more : kilometro 3 1/2 means 3.500 meters from the beginning of the road you will find the house you want. Happy to help you.
