Hi,

Difficult to propose a solid plan since you are not mentioning how many days you are staying and where do you want to focus so I'll just give some general guidelines.

First of all the weather in October is still quite good so I think you will enjoy in the maximum your vacations.

Of course you have to stay at least 2 days in Athens in order to visit Acropolis and to walk in the picturesque alleys of plaka, thissio, monastiraki and in the center of the city.

Next I would advice you to visit one of the islands near Athens because it is easy to get there and you can have a very good taste of the Greek islands. The closest are the islands in the island complex Kyklades. In this complex you can find the famous islands Santorini,Mykonos, Ios but also other not that famous out of Greece like Tinos, Syros. I would recommend you to visit Tinos island I think 2-3 days in that island totally worths it. Beautiful beaches, picturesque villages a strong taste of the cycladic culture.

After that you can go back to the mainland and visit Thessaloniki the second biggest city in Greece. Thessaloniki has it's own colors and style while around the city there are avlot of opportunities for daily excursions.

As for booking I know that booking via a travel agency is easy but maybe it will come cheaper if you book the places yourself. Actually you only need to book accommodation in advance since in transportation you are not going to have a problem since you are in low season. I cannot help you for Athens or Thessaloniki but in Tinos check http://www.ageri.gr .
