  1. Yes their both the same and basically there are two types ie., the Crane and Barrel. They're used for attachin' the main fishin' line to one end of it and a leader to the other which is followed by a hook, lure, spinner, etc.. Another variation is the Snap Swivel . Hope this somewhat answers your question;)...

  2. FishSteelhead is dead on! I would just like to add to your options, the ball bearing swivel. The best constructed (and most expensive) of all swivels. Swivels are used between a lure or leader and line to prevent line twist. Without a swivel, line twist can occur when a revolving lure twists line and causes tangles.(very annoying!) Here's a ball bearing swivel.
