What i'd do is ask what each thing is, and if there's an ingredient you've never tried, go for it.

Typical french stuff you'll probably have a hard avoiding are:

croque monsieur

moules frites

ratatouille

gratin dauphinois

clafoutis

pain au chocolat

all pertain to different categories (sweet, salty) - I'll leave you to discover which

Wherever you go, look for the 'regional specialities' onthe menu, all regions, even down to small towns, have local speciality dishes, they are all just great!

In France you can find all kinds of food because there is a diversity of cultures. Dont leave France without trying their "fondue" melted cheese with vegetables, and u also have to try the japanese and the chinese there because its wonderful. You'll also find many lebanese restaurants and turkish too, you have to try them too.

Depends if you are fussy or not.

Menu du jour (special of the day - starter, main & dessert) is nearly always good value and usually uses the veg/fruit of the season.

Each area has it's own regional specialities. Try asking what they are. Go to small restaurants rather than big commercial chains if you can. If you show an interest and are open to trying things you will probably find that you will be well looked after and they will recommend what is best.

At the school canteen in France children are brought up to eat a wide variety of things – like artichokes or asparagus for a starter, salad, all kinds of fish and meat for main followed by cheese and or dessert. They don’t (or at least didn’t when my children were at school) have the same concept of “children’s food” – chicken nuggets, chips & bean! (eugh!). So you will probably find the food varied and interesting – unless you only like burgers and chips…
