Look up "The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea" or search the net for "Ships and Superstition"

    There's a drink

    for the gods at launching...flowers on board...whistling...women on board...starting a voyage on certain days...carrying a feather...blah,blah,blah

    You gotta go look.

    Good luck.

  4. Whistling at sea is verboten. It's said to bring on a gale, but the real reason is actually practical - whistles were used as signals when raising or lowering something by rope, and someone whistling could cause confusion and possibly danger.

  5. There are numerous superstitions about boats and boating, and theyvary from country to country.

It is unlucky to see a clergyman by the boats before setting of to sea. In such a case, the men might grumble No fish for we tonight. - Cornish Superstition

Like the bell of a church, the ship’s bell had the task of keeping away all hostile influences such as storms and devils.

It is said that a ship’s bell that rings without human aid is an omen of death.

When first boarding a ship, it is said to be unlucky to step forward with the left foot first. However, it is much worse if you also sneeze to the left while doing so.
