  1. plasma's use about 30 times more power than an LCD, but it's also got a little bit better colourisation

  2. I can't recommend a TV in India, because I live in the states, but I can tell you the difference between the two in general layman's terms.

The plasma TV uses gases trapped in plasma that show a different color when charged.... (oh gee that's great!!)

LCD TV's  uses liquid crystals sorta trapped between a couple of layers of thin film (sorry, this is about as generic as I can get).  They put out less heat, use less energy and are not as succeptible to burn-in as a plasma screen is.  A good example of burn-in, is if you left a certain image on your LCD (whether computer monitor or TV) for a long period of time, that image would actually "burn" itself into your screen and be noticiable, like a shadow, even when the TV is turned off.  However LCD's can all have  a "pixel" burn out which would leave a black spot on your screen (or maybe white), this can't be repaired.

Plasma's generally give a better picture with much deeper blacks, especially in large sizes - 50" and above - below that, I believe it totally depends on the specs of the TV.  Response time (lower the better) and Contrast Ratio (Higher the better) are the key things to look for.

A high response time (remember lower is better) will give sort of "ghosting" in movies or games that have a lot of action.

Contrast ratio - the lower numbers like 1500:1, suffer from a lack of contrast in blacks.  Meaning that the lower the number, generally the less black you have.  Don't minimize this - this is very important as it relates to the other colors that display.  If you compare a 1500:1 contrast TV to a 20,000:1 - you will totally see the difference. Of course TV's here in the states that have a contrast ratio that high can cost about 3 grand.

Sorry I can't help you in the market in India, but maybe you're a little wiser and can make a better informed decision.

    Good luck to you!

    Robert
