  1. Parking is a MAJOR problem in every Italian city. Renting a car to travel around in is fine,. but if you're going to be staying in any city for more than a day, you're better off without a car. Not to mention the way those people drive.....

  2. That depends on where you're staying. I would avoid trying to park or even drive in Rome as it's a nightmare. Florence is quite easy to traverse but just be careful to park in a designated spaces or the police will tow your car. I found Naples to be a bit of a pain for parking but a little patience paid off and I managed to squeeze in a space.

The driver are a bit wild though and seem to get worse the further south you travel.

    Buona fortuna

  3. it probably makes sense to rent a car, but if i were u i would still not venture deep downtown with it. Free parking spaces are getting harder and harder to find, traffic is hectic,. tourist season is coming and places are not countless..  Public transportation may be more impractical out of town (especially the timetables) but it's pretty good in the cities (i am Italian, from the North). So why not go as far in as u can with  your car and then park it somewhere and go on by bus. It will also pollute less :-)

I am not going into the debate on Italians and how they drive. I've been to several other countries in Europe and I've seen the same stuff all over (try Paris or Athens...). But do be careful about car theft, in some areas of the country. Always leave it locked!! And ask the locals how they feel about security there, if they don't reply (unlikely, because they are still pretty helpful with foreigners), u'll see the answer in their faces anyway.

PS Car rentals have insurance anyway, so don't worry yourself sick.

Just be alert to your environment, like in any new place, and u'll be fine!
