  1. Not quite a forest but this is nevertheless worth a trip.

    Bannerghatta National Park

This park, 20km south of Bangalore, is home to Indian leopards, lions, tigers, and elephants. You can drive around on a zoo-safari where the animals are fenced in. The park also has a snake and crocodile farm. Open daily except Tues. You can get here by taking bus #365 (platform 15) at the City bus stand.

    Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

This sanctuary, 4km southwest of Srirangapatnam, attracts a large number of migrating birds. At this place, the Kaveri River is wide and there are several islands, providing sanctuary for the birds. It is possible to take a boat ride around the islands and view the birds. Viewing is especially good in October and November. Besides birds, there are crocodiles. Open daily 9 am to 6 pm Admission Rs 100. The most convenient way to get here is by rickshaw from Srirangapatnam. From Mysore, you take bus #126.

  2. Bannerghatta is the excellent place which matches your requirement. You would have an excellent opportunity to see Lions, Tiger, deer, Bear , crocodiles very close to your van .

Taking snaps of these animals very much close to you is again something which is really unforgottable.

  3. You can also try contacting Trekking groups (just search for them on yahoo groups) there are lots of people who go rock climbing, river rafting etc on a regular basis so you could join them. There's a place at the bottom of Brigade Road that deals in adventure sports equipment and they could tell you more (sorry I don't know the name)

  4. If you are interested in traking through the forest, I would like to suggest that dharmasthala is a nice place. you can get state transport bus, move overnight reach there in morning. There is facility to stay for some days also. Basically a religious place, surrounded by jungle area, mostly palms,

Also nearby is kuke subramanium, that also is nice to look deep. Both are in mangalore district.
