  1. Did you buy a long or short board?

  2. Most of the Eastern shore is really rocky. You'll definitely need a full body wet suit, that water is hella cold!  I suppose that if you are determined enough, you will find a place to practice your surfing.

You will probably have to take a trip south before you find any really good surfing, probably as far down as Virginia Beach,  Virginia and Myrle Beach, North Carolina.

  3. Hmmmm. There's not a whole lot of good surfing on the east coast period. You just have to make the best of what you have. If you just got your board it's probably good you don't take on too much at first anyway.

  4. Let's get one thing straight for your benefit, right off the bat. Some of the Answerers don't klnow much about Maryland. The Eastern Shore of Maryland is composed of the state's nine counties east of the Chesapeake Bay. They are Caroline County, Cecil County, Dorchester County, Kent County, Queen Anne's County, Somerset County, Talbot County, Wicomico County, Worcester County.Caroline County has no Bay shoreline. Only Worcester County has seashore, consisting of coastal bays and marshes behind two barrier islands. The number of barrier islands on the Maryland seacoast and the location of inlets has varied over the years.

The only part that is "rocky" is the shore of the Chesapeake Bay, not the seashore in Worcester County, where Ocean City is located.

Also, there is great surf all up and down the east coast of the US, only Californians like to make believe that they have the only surf in the Continental US. The only real dead spots are southern Florida (the Bahamas mess up the swell) and southern Georgia (the Continental shelf extends too far out to sea).

Also, the water is a tad cold right now. But not bad. I was out all weekend (and yes, there were NO WAVES but I went out swimming and paddling around in a 3/2 suit in Cape May County New Jersey). Actually, because of the Gulf Stream, the waters of the Atlantic Coast get warmer in the summer than the Pacific does in California.

And, another correction, Myrtle Beach has some of the worst surf in South Carolina. There was an ESA contest there last month, but it still doesn't have much to offer. You need to go further south in South Carolina to find any consistent, decent surf I have a favorite South Carolina spot I will not name.

Ocean City Maryland is an extremely popular surfing destination, however, like most of the east coast, summer is the 'off season' but there are more rideable days than not. A fair ride up the road from OC is the state of Delaware. Indian River Inlet is a great spot. Check out surfline.com, and see all of the great spots that are an easy drive from Maryland. I have been surfing Cape May and Atlantic County New Jersey for over 40 years, and in the right spot, on the right day, it is all you would ever want.
