She goes to a montessori. its been about 6 months now. although she knows how to count and knows her sound cards she has difficulty relating the sound to the alphabet and relating the number to the actual number. I have to tell it to her over and over again and even then she will answer correctly once and then she mixes them up again. her teacher found the same problem too. so now i am paying more attention to her at home and i make her practice at home as well but i need to know if this is just a matter of time and effort or should i be concerned? What can i do to make it more receptive, so that she better grasps the concept?

  1. Hi! I have 2 children ages 8 & 6 and worked in daycare setting for over 8years. What I found really helped my girls is a Product put out by Leap Frog- The First one is a DVD called the "Letter Factory" it teaches sound/letter recognition, then there is another that helps them put sounds/letters together to build words- unsure of this title- also think they have some math ones. I really like these and they helped my girls alot . My 8yr old now loves to read and 6yr old is learning. I found these products at Walmart sure you could find them there or at simuliar store maybe even available at local library to check out.

    Hope this helps

  2. Try and test her for ADD. One of my family members had trouble like this a long time ago where you tell him something over and over and he just doesn't listen, and he turned out to have ADD.

Or, it could be that she just doesn't listen.

Give it time and let it play out

  3. Keep in mind that letter-sound correlation is something that kids really hit hard in Kindergarten.  Preschool is basically just a vehicle to get them started since letter-sound correspondence and number recognition take time to learn.  I teach preschool aged children and have found that while most of them leave with knowledge of some letter-sound correspondence and number recognition, none of them know it all...if they leave preschool even being able to match just a couple letters to sounds and recognize a couple numbers, they are already ahead of many of their classmates by the time they get to Kindergarten.  This is a time for her to be able to recognize some letters which will just prepare her for Kindergarten where they really hit the letter recognition and number recognition as well.

  4. She is only 4 years old.  Give her time.  It sounds like this little girl is under a lot of pressure to learn things before she is ready.  She probably needs to mature a little more before being ready for such academics.  Focus on reading lots of interesting and fun stories to her, the same ones over and over again if that is what she likes.  Talk about the pictures and let her tell the story to you if she wants to.  Leave the sounds cards for school.  If she is still having difficulty a year from now, you might look for further input and help, but for now let her have more fun and less practice.  Best of luck with it.
