1. Stop wiping it away- the irritation is probably making it come back faster.

2. Most causes of the 'goo' are bad news. I would recommend having it seen by a vet soon. Some possibilities include eye injury, eye infections, respiratory infections, and so on.

Mild cases respond to Neomycin or Chloramphenicol eye ointment. Where you see severely swollen eyelids there is usually a primary bacterial infection in which case a course of antibiotics will be essential. Some eye problems are simply an indication of vitamin A deficiency.
