All speakers are properly connected, as the test sound from the setup menu shows. But only 2 speakers and the sub-woofer gives output during normal operation.

  1. You need to select Dolby Matrix (or another similar processing type) to get 5.1 sound from a stereo source, otherwise you will only utilize 2.1 sound. Dolby Digital requires a 5.1 source such as a DVD movie connected digitally.

  2. You have to select Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack on the DVD menu.

Just go to 'setup' then audio options.

  3. The above answers are correct yet somewhat incomplete. When listening to standard 2 channel sources such as Stereo TV or any device that does not output surround sound, you will need to select a surround sound emulation setting within your tuner as described above. When your listening to a source that has 5.1 or greater, select direct surround sound or Dolby digital. Your receiver should retain the settings for each input. The trick is that when your watching TV, some stations are 5.1 and others are not. Keep your remote handy!
