  1. In my opinion, I wouldn't start him so soon. Only because he is still very young and uncoordinated. I would wait till he is at least 7. But if you want him to start something, I read that some places have a special program designed for younger children. I have one in my area that teaches what they call "Lil Ninja's." There main focus is to prepare the child for martial arts and teach balance and coordination. Other than that I wouldn't get you hopes up if your kid decides to quit. It sometimes can be very hard for a child, I know from experience. When I was about 6, I tried karate, and hated it. Now I tried karate and other martial arts and love it.

  2. Ummm try Karate its much more common

  3. I currently have my 5 year old son enrolled in the same martial arts class as myself.  I do have a humble martial arts background though.  However, I do not believe this to be too young of an age.  Children are sponges at this age and very flexible.  It may or may not jump start a liking for physical activity (if not already) but thats for him to decide.  At this point (similar to what someone else wrote) he would be learning more of the balance, coordination, discipline and conditioning aspects of martial arts in a fun and safe environment...and just getting some good old exercise which may or may not be provided at schools nowadays.  Your gain would be exercise, martial knowledge and sharing this experience with him...which is the best part.  Regardless of what style you choose....you need to be cautious of some schools.  Just like you would pick a daycare or private school, you should ask around and do a little research yourself.  Most schools offer a trial period...take advantage of those.  Look for longevity as a good measuring stick.  At five years old it is very important who he is learning anything from.  Be wary of lengthy contracts and unrealistic promises.    Like any other industry you have your good guys and you have your crooked ones, even in martial arts unfortunately.  But by all means give it a good try.

  4. any of them. go to different schools see which instructors you like and make sure they are not after just money and actually have you and your kid in mind. you find a school with that and you will probably not regret it

  5. karate. i'm in a club with loads of young kids.

  6. judo would be great for a child of that age, have fun, learn some discipline, learn something.

other matrial arts, Karate, Aikido, etc need quiote a lot of concentration which might be out of reach of many childreen at the age of 5.

  7. Contrary to an earlier post, 5 years old is not too early to enroll your son in any physical activity, including martial arts.

The fact that you are looking to engage in this with him is a great gift to both of you.

In deciding on which martial art to study you have to figure out what your overall goal is for both you & your son.

If you are looking for a martial art that is a great full body work out & is also highly practical in the real world, should either of you ever end up in an actual fight, I would suggest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Many martial arts schools today teach olympic style forms. Absolutely fine if your goal is to get in shape but they are not very practical in an actual fight unless you have been a student of them for many years.

Go to places, speak to the instructors about their styles & philosophies & take a free class.

    Good luck.

  8. IMO 5 is WAY too young

    Having said that...

I would suggest Karate, Judo or Taekwondo.

If it is available in your area, Kid's Ninjutsu is a good combination of martial arts and play.

  9. I know a friend who is a bit older than your son but he really enjoys Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu, and Judo.

  10. Pit fighting.  Not as violent as it sounds.  Might have to fly to Thailand.
