Hi all! What are the nasty brown lines on iceberg lettuce? And is it OK to eat it?

those lines are from the lettuce not getting enough oxygen so the lettuce is going bad. i would not eat it

Hello to you too! I can't eat iceberg lettuce that has nasty brown lines. If I'm not mistaken, I think they are caused by oxidation. This is the same process that makes your apples brown.

It kind of grosses me out so I just throw it in the blender and eat, well drink, it like that.

if there just the little red toned lines and their arnt that many, its fine to eat...when the leaves start to wilt and discolor, then you should through it out...although if it just started to show you can pull off the outer leaves and it should still be good in the center...

Heyyyy...Just cut the nasty brown line off and you should be fine..

I wouldn't eat iceberg with or without the brown lines.  It has nearly no nutritional value...especially for a vegetarian.  Try dark leafy greens like spinach.
