  1. If you have a receipt number, you can look up the status of your case online.

If not, call the toll-free number often.  You may have to wait on the phone for a long time, but it doesn't delay your case

USCIS HAS been known to lose things.  In fact I have seen them forget to notify someone and then tell them their visa was approved but has now expired and they have to re-apply all over.  So write to your Congressman if the case doesn't seem to be moving.  A Congressman must be answered within 72 hours.

  2. Yak Rider is correct about the over all length, but once the petition has been approved and transfered to the National Visa Center, it's usually only there for a few months before it's sent on the the embassy overseas. Once the petition has been transferred to the NVC your USCIS tracking number won't help you much as the NVC is funded by the State Department. It's not part of DHS or USCIS. The NVC is very good about keeping track of the paperwork, as unlike the USCIS, immigrant visa petitions are all they do, all the time. The petitioner is contacted and requested to provide an affidavit of support (AOS) and a processing fee. How long that takes depends to some extent on how long it takes the petitioner to respond and whether he has filled out the AOS properly or has to resubmit. Check out http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/... Once it goes on to the embassy, how long it takes depends partially on their backlog and how long it takes the beneficiary to fill out the forms and get police clearances and inform the embassy that they are ready to be interviewed. However, the NVC does do scheduling for some embassies.

  3. If you are a US citizen, you can expect the entire process to take about a year.

If you hold a green card, you can expect your wife to wait about 5 years for a visa to become available.
