  1. This is going to depend a lot on what feels good to you. Hybrid bikes may be a little less picky about where you ride them. My recommendation would be to try anything you can get your hands on and see what feels comfortable to you for what you want it to do. As far as the size, I would speculate 58cm, this will also vary from bike to bike as some manufacturers measure from centerlines as others measure across the outside. I would seek a reputable bike shop to make certain you find something that fits you well. A good fit is a joy to ride for many miles to come.

  2. Any vehicle is a compromise. You might sacrifice comfort for performance, for instance.

With bikes, it's all about making 1/2 HP (you) take you where you want to go. Any little advantage is a huge help at this scale.

A clean chain can make all the difference.

Modifications...like ratios, frame clearance, crank length, brake type, suspension, etc., etc., all involve giving up one thing to gain another.

So with that said: You tailor the machine to do exactly what you usually do that you care the most about.

Like roadbikes, built for efficiency on a paved road.

Moto-X bikes, made to handle in very rough terrain.

ATBs or Mountain Bikes: Made for trails.

Hybrids are the features of two adjacent types, like Road and ATB, your bike ends up a compromise between both. Not as good as a roadbike, but ok, and not the best dirt bike, but ok

Sometimes when you do those things all the time and just ride one bike for both, that's the solution. But if you want to be hi-perf in one type of terrain, you gotta specialise..

Do your homework or trust your dealer and find out exactly what you want the bike to do. Then when you have it nailed, go out and look for a bike that can do that.

Ask around, go to competitions, read magazines, talk to riders. Come up with a dreambike and then make it real.

Maybe you have to make modifications, but remember, a good frame is more important than anything else on a bike.

You can modify the rest to suit your picture.

To size a bike: sit on the bike with both feet on the pedals. You will have to hold yourself up with your hand, or get a helper. put the arch of your foot on the pedal and extend your leg. Your knee should be very slightly bent.

Then pedal backwards with the balls of your feet on the pedals slowly, checking your hip bones for rocking. If you rock, your seat is too high.

Your handlebars on a road bike should be adjusted so that the top of the gooseneck is on a level with the mean height of the seat.
