  1. Are you a citizen of the US?  Just going as a tourist?  You don't need a visa.

  2. You need a passport period.  Forget the Visa.

You can stay up to six months on your passport you only need to get permission from the local Gardai station a few days after you enter the country.

When you go through customs make sure you tell the customs you are staying with a friend.  They will usually give you  30 days if you ask but they will tell you to report to the local Garda if you want more time.

if you go to  the Gardai. They want to make sure you have your own money be prepared to show a bank statement.  Your own insurance from your country.  And a place to stay in IReland or whoever you are visiting with should go with you to verifiy you are staying with them.  They are making sure you will not need their social services

  3. you need a passport to visit, you don't need a visa unless you plan on an extended stay, like over 6o days
