Monica and Mich Gorden both want to buy a scooter. Monica has already saved $25 and plans to save 5$ per week until she can buy the scooter,Mich has $16 and plans to save $8 per week.

In how many weeks will Monica and Mic have saved the same amount of money?

How much will each person have saved at that time?

Minus 16 from both sides

9 + 5x = 8x

Minus 5x from both sides

3x = 9

x = 3

In three weeks they will have the same amount of money.

Plus in x to the equation.   They will both have $40.

25 + 5x = 16 + 8x

Combine like terms:

Subtract 16 from both sides and 5x from both sides:

9 = 3x

Divide both sides by 3:

x = 3

It will take three weeks before both have the same amount of money saved.

Substitute 3 for x in the first equation:

25 + (5*3) = 16 + (8*3)

40 = 40

Each would have $40 saved.
