  1. Most people would probably agree that the South Island is prettier and more scenic than the North Island....but there are still things to see and do there. being a South Island girl and having lived here for 95% of my life I know more about the South Island.

The main places I guess I like the most in the South Island are the West Coast, which has less people living there ( but lots of tourists), lots of bush/forests, lakes, glaciers and sea views......I think its stunning.

Then there is Queenstown...lots of tourists, but for good reason, there are lots of adventure type things to do there like bungee jumping, paragliding, jet boating and so on. There are stunning views too.

I like the Mount Cook National Park/Mackenzie basin area as its different to the West coast being much drier and so has a different look to it.

THere is whale watching in Kaikoura and I'm sure you can swim with the dolpins there and in other places around the country.

Fiordland is breathtaking and well worth a look....

I like the Marlborough Sounds and the Abel Tasman area, which are both on the water...there are walking tracks ( have to book) as well as kayaking, boating, fishing...

I am not sure where you are from, but even tho Pumpkin Patch is a local company I often bought it cheaper when I was living in England and sent it back to my sister here!

There are other "mainstream"places like Farmers, Kmart, the Warehouse as well  as baby shops for local areas

try the website below for sightseeing options

My opinion South Island Is the best  -

    Regions –

Marlborough - "the wine and food capital of the country"

Nelson/Golden Bay - "hops and crops and crafts"  Sunniest place in NZ

Canterbury - "Christchurch . . . a garden city more English than England

The West Coast - "a heritage of mining shapes the land and the people"

Mount Cook to Wanaka - "magnificent mountains and picture-perfect lake, winter sports and the worlds most beautiful fighting machines"

Queenstown and Central Otago - "the adventure centre of the Pacific"

Dunedin - "The Antipodean Edinburgh "

Fiordland "a raw, elemental, awe-inspiring landscape"

Southland - "of oysters, tuataras, bootleg hooch . . . and solitude"
