Hi weeman,

First, let me say that you are right to buy the "best gear". Kiteboarding learning curve has become so steep that it makes no sense buying intermediate/beginners kites. You should take KiteLessons with the school's gear, then rent for a few more sessions, then buy the best gear, so that you can enjoy it a long time.

WHAT'S THE BEST KITE?

Well... it depends of your preferences, skill level and riding style.

There are specific kites for surfing, speed, high-jumping, beginning, freestyling, snowboarding.. etc.

Actually, you should buy the same type of kite you've been taught with. If you don't, you'll have to re-learn security, relaunch techniques and flying behaviour. If you're new to the sport, you've been taught with either an Hybrid SLE (Suspented Leading Edge) or a "flat" or "Bow" kite (also suspented but much flatter whether under the "Bow" license or not). If you've learn ages ago, you can ride 4/5 liners C-Kites too.

From your question, I take it that you are at least "intermediate" so here are a selection of AllRound HighPerf. Kites. A personal choice. Of course there are many alternatives...:

One more point: As all new kites are good enough nowadays, so you should also consider the looks...

My security advice for colours: choose bright for small sizes; you want people to be able to see you from far away when you broke a line and you are surrounded by dark waves and a dark sky.

- Your best shot would be your KiteSchool; they usually double as KiteShops as well and, as they know you, they'll give you the best advice and maybe the best discount.
